Updates on the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test
Beginning October 20, 2025, USCIS will administer the updated 2025 Naturalization Civics Test to applicants who file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, on or after that date. This change is important for anyone preparing to apply for U.S. citizenship, as the test format and scoring will directly affect your naturalization journey.
The 2025 Civics Test is an oral exam where applicants will be asked 20 questions from the official list of 128 civics questions. To pass, you must correctly answer 12 out of 20 questions. If you answer 9 questions incorrectly, you will automatically fail. Officers will stop the exam as soon as you reach either 12 correct answers (passing) or 9 incorrect answers (failing).
This new structure makes preparation more critical than ever. Applicants should study the full set of 128 civics questions and be comfortable answering them out loud. You can find the new 2025 questions here. With focus and practice, you can build the confidence needed to pass and take the next big step toward U.S. citizenship.
